One key component of prenatal yoga is learning how to breathe. Most of us think we already have that mastered–but there’s a big difference in breathing with purpose and intention. Like anything, the more you do it, the more skilled at it you’ll be, and the more available it becomes in times of stress.  Breath is a key component in regulating emotional and physiological responses, which can at times, feel like they’re ruling your life during pregnancy. They’re also a huge part of labor, delivery, and dealing with the stresses and fears that all new moms face once the baby is born.

If “learning breath” sounds like a lot of yoga nonsense, try this exercise for a moment. Think of something that scares or stresses you, and then breath as quickly as you can in and out of your nose for 45 seconds.  Notice your pulse, your emotional state, and stress level. Racing, right? Next, imagine that same stress, but close your eyes, take long deep breaths in the nose, and listen to the sound of that inhale. Release the breath through the nose just as slowly, truly bring your attention to the sound of the release, and empty it all the way from your belly. Continue through the slow drawing in and out of breath, for a minute or so.

Notice the difference in how your mind, pulse and spirit change? That’s just one little lesson on the importance of breath in prenatal yoga, and beyond.
